Out of the Shadows

Out of the Shadows

Silhoutte in Nocturne

In the space of a moment's reflection, one has the chance to see below the surface - to discover new depths, unfold stories, and underlying inflections.

Out of the Shadows gives us a chance to reflect, to look more closely - if just for a second - and see the once hidden stories rise from the depths.

Doing Good at Milliken

Long before "sustainability" entered our everyday language, Milliken understood that a living enterprise and a living earth were inextricably linked.

As early as the early 1900's we were reusing packaging and textile materials in our operations and documented our first recycling policy. By the late 1900's Milliken developed a comprehensive plan to eliminate waste, increase product performance and preserve resources — years before the first clean air and water acts and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency were formed.

Milliken Wins 2 R&D 100 Awards

ResQ™ Flame Resistant Fabric and Concrete Cloth™ Cement Impregnated Fabric Recognized as Two of the Most Technologically Significant Products of 2012

Milliken & Company was recognized by R&D Magazine with two R&D 100 Awards – recognition given to the 100 most technologically significant products introduced in the last year on the basis of their importance, uniqueness, innovation, and usefulness. The magazine recognized Milliken for ResQ™ flame resistant fabrics, and Milliken and Concrete Canvas, Ltd. for Concrete Cloth™ cement impregnated fabric.

A fabric designed to withstand the rigors of the U.S. military, ResQ provides a thermal barrier that can reduce the likelihood and severity of burns caused by explosions and fuel fires by up to 50%, thereby helping to improve the predicted survivability rates in these situations by up to 65%. Additionally, with twice the tear strength as other flame resistant materials, ResQ is durable enough to stand up to the extremes of today’s warfare situations, doubling the expected lifetime of the garment.

ResQ Flame Resistant Fabric Hard at Work

Concrete Cloth is a three-dimensional fabric impregnated with a cement mix that is a unique substitute for concrete. It requires no forms, no mixing, and minimal equipment, and it provides a cost-effective solution for the building and infrastructure industry for applications such as erosion control, pipe protection and repair, and mining. Available in large rolls, the material can be laid in place and hardened just by adding water, saving significant man hours and cost. Concrete Cloth is also more ecologically friendly because it uses up to 95% less concrete than conventional materials.

Concrete Cloth Provides a Cost-Effective Solution to Formed Concrete Needs
"We are honored to be recognized with two R&D 100 awards this year," said Dr. Joe Salley, CEO, Milliken. "Concrete Cloth and ResQ are great examples of the efforts by our associates to create innovations that do good for the world."

Southern Analog

Southern Analog Collection
Panoramic, Viewfinder, Voltage, Pinhole, Fisheye, Double Exposure

In a world of megapixels and hi-tech imaging, we've found beauty in the lo-fi photos of a disposable camera. The grainy geometry of a chain-link fence and hard shadow of a leaing street sign craft lines that are scattered and true.  The ghostly whiteness of a bleached-out sunrise and heavy blackness of a dimming porchlight create contrast too strong to be ignored.  These photos are gritty, unbalanced and recklessly beautiful.  Their unconstrained vitality is the inspiration for Southern Analog.
